Good news. Bad news.

The good news is that Houston’s popular mayor, Bill White (D) is said to be planning to run for the U.S. Senate at the end of his term as mayor.

Frankly anyone would have to be better than the senators we have. But White is actually a good guy, and that really showed in his tireless work and calm, reassuring manner during and after Hurricane Ike.

The bad news is that the reason the senate seat will be open is that the infamous Kay Bailey Hutchison will be running for Governor of Texas. The only thing worse I can imagine is if “our” other senator, John Cornyn, were to run for governor—that’s assuming that he does actually exist and is not an animation, made for TV. IHe sure doesn’t respond to his constituents.)

On the one hand, it finally means we’ll be getting rid of Governor Goodhair, as the late, great Molly Ivins used to call him. On the other hand, the Texas governorship has served as a political springboard before. Does this mean yet another former Texas Republican governor is planning to run for President?

If so, all I can say is, Americans, listen to us Texans next time! We told you Dubya was bad news. But did you listen? Noooooo. Well, now do you see what you did?

If Bill White wins, he should be a great Texas governor. I feel sure he would be a popular one.

If he later decides to run for President, we will let you know how he did. This time, pay attention, OK?
