Earth Day 2009 Matters. Here’s Why.

Earth Day began in 1970 when 20 million people across America peacefully demonstrated to save the environment by ending pollution and the wanton destruction of species and ecosystems. Legislators got the message.
Several pieces of landmark legislation to clean up toxic waste, alleviate air pollution, and clean up rivers and streams directly resulted from that Earth Day [...]

Propaganda Strikes Deep

As the old song says, ”Propaganda strikes deep. Into your mind it will creep….” Oh, wait! That’s “paranoia”. But actually propaganda leads to paranoia—both for the people who are lied to and for the liars. You can see it any day on FOX TV or hear it on AM radio talk shows.
Either the propagandists start to believe [...]

Cleaning up the Clean Water Act

Congress is “this close” to passing a bill to restore the Clean Water Act to its pristine glory, cleaning up the mess made by the Bush administration. You see, to please the coal industry, the Bushites passed a rule that it was OK to blast the tops of mountains and dump the resulting millions of tons of coal waste into streams—-even to cover up and block streams entirely.

The result was literally coal black tap water for many residents of Appalachia. And even when it was not black, some of that water was toxic. Oh, and incidentally the destruction of over 1200 miles of streams in (formerly beautiful) Appalachia.

The rule-change was made so that it would be cheaper for coal companies to blow the tops off ancient, forested mountains in Appalachia (hundreds of mountains so far!) and bulldoze the leftover, dirt, stones, trees, and toxic waste into the valleys and streams below.

The problem with that is that it polluted the drinking water (coal black tapwater!) for millions of people downstream.

So if you are an “American” who hopes the President will fail…

So if you are an “American” who is wishing and hoping that the President’s plan to restore the U.S. economy fails, what does that make you?

It makes you Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, or one of a host of right-wing propagandists and ill-wishers, including some prominent right-wing clergy, who have publicly stated that they are rooting from the President’s efforts to save the U.S. economy from meltdown and to alleviate the suffering of millions of Americans who are losing their jobs, homes, and health will fail.

Wanting millions of Americans to suffer and thousands of businesses to fail. Does that sound like patriotism to you?

Earth Day, Every Day, Because…

Just in case you forgot what planet you are on, here is a reminder that Earth Day is coming up on April 22.

All the other planets have had a day each week for thousands of years

Somehow it took us till 1970 to remember to give Earth her own day, and that is just once a year. Well, all the weekdays were already taken.

So in case you have forgotten what the point is of Earth Day, how it started, and how it is still celebrated, watch this video:

Craig Ferguson is interviewing Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who turns out to be a charming character. Very disarming. Then he turns serious.

Let Molly Ivins Speak from Your Site!

The late, great Molly Ivins is still with us in spirit, of course. One can imagine her pithy commentary on current events.

Molly would have loved to be here to see Obama elected. She would have had a field day making fun of Coleman trying to sue to get back the Senate seat he lost to Al Franken in a close but scrupulously recounted election. She would have skewered the hypocrisy of—-well, just too many to list—and we would have all had fun watching her do it.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Power is ever stealing from the many to the few. —Wendell Phillips, US abolitionist (1811 – 1884)

Want to Save $Billions in the Federal Budget?

Want to cut billions of dollars of waste from the U.S. federal budget? (So we can put the money to best use in reviving our ailing economy?) Here’s how: Cut the so-called “Defense” budget. Let’s start by cutting so-called defense costs by 25%.

Not only does “Defense” consume half the federal budget, an immense amount of the money is wasted.
